Inspection, Testing & Maintenance

Fire dampers are crucial passive fire protection devices that play a vital role in preventing the spread of smoke and fire.

However, if they are not regularly checked, tested, cleaned, and maintained then they can fail to work in an emergency, putting the lives of those in the building at risk and allowing smoke and fire to rapidly spread throughout the property.

At Swiftclean, our experts are on hand to carry out professional, reliable, and affordable testing services for fire dampers in Leeds. No matter the industry, size, type or complexity of your premises and fire safety system, we have the skills and experience to help manage your fire damper testing, checks, inspections, cleaning, and maintenance for you.

How Do Fire Dampers Work?

Fire dampers are fitted inside HVAC (heating, ventilation, air conditioning) ductwork where they pass through fire compartment barriers such as – fireproof ceilings, walls, floors, and partitions.

The dampers themselves comprise of spring-loaded shutters which remain open the majority of the time when the damper is not in use, allowing air to pass freely throughout the ducts. There are different types of sensors, but most use a fusible link which will melt when a certain temperature is reached and triggers the damper that quickly springs shut.

    This seals the ductwork, slowing the spread of smoke and fire . Without effective working dampers, the ducts can become a passageway for smoke and fire to travel through and spread quickly to other areas of the building.

    Why is Fire Damper Testing So Important?

    A lot of people may think that the mere presence of fire dampers in a property is enough and because they are hidden away inside ductwork, they can go unchecked or untested for years, putting the building and everyone on the premises at risk.

    Fire dampers are a vital element of any fire safety system which is why thorough and regular testing is essential to make sure that they are fully functioning and able to work as effectively as possible in the event that they are needed.

    Here are just some of the many ways that fire dampers help;

    • Delay smoke and fire from travelling quickly through ducts to other areas of the building
    • Help to prevent exits and escape routes from becoming compromised and keeps them clear for people to escape
    • Allow more time for emergency services to arrive
    • Provide the valuable extra minutes needed for those inside to evacuate safely
    • Greatly reduce the amount of damage to the property, stock, belongings, and equipment
    • Help to preserve routes for emergency services who need to gain access
