Vertical risers form part of the extraction system and can typically be found on the outside of a building. Like any ductwork, they can accumulate grease and debris over time, and in line with BESA TR19® Grease, they must be regularly cleaned to ensure they comply with the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order.
Swiftclean carries out chemical riser cleaning which, as it can be used in place of abseiling, makes it a safer and quicker process, removing the risks associated with technicians working on ropes.
It also removes the requirement for access equipment such as towers and supports, saving you money and time.
Not all risers can be cleaned using this service. Conditions must be right, for example, the riser must be straight with no bends and there must be a minimum of one access door at the top and one at the bottom. We will always advise you on whether your system is suitable before carrying out any work.

FAQ’s
How is cleaning carried out?
The chemical is foamed and then sprayed into the riser. It clings to the surface and is left for at least 3 hours – the longer the better.
The grease is then cleaned off with water and the waste is collected at the bottom of the riser by large absorbent pads which we remove when we leave the site.
What are the benefits of having my riser cleaned?
- Insurance Compliance
To remain compliant with many insurances for restaurants and other commercial premises you must ensure that your grease extraction systems are well maintained to avoid grease build-up. This includes the risers.
- Reduce Fire Risks
Ensuring your risers are properly maintained and cleaned can significantly reduce the risk of fires on the premises.
- Regulatory Compliance
It is a regulatory requirement to ensure that the grease extraction system including any risers is properly maintained. Regularly inspecting and cleaning, can help you remain compliant.
- Saves time
Risers can travel through several floors of a building and often the managers/owners responsible for each level are different. To clean each level, you may need to contact several people which could take weeks to arrange and delay any cleaning. Using a chemical riser cleaning service takes away this time-consuming process.
Do I get a post-clean report?
Yes. This TR19® Grease Compliant report includes:
- An executive summary with a clear statement (yes or no) indicating whether or not the system was cleaned in its entirety.
- A recommendation of cleaning frequency based on the pre-clean Grease Thickness Test readings.
