What Is a Thermostatic Mixing Valve?
A Thermostatic Mixing Valve (TMV) is a safety device that blends hot and cold water to deliver water at a safe, controlled temperature at outlets such as taps, showers and baths.
TMVs are designed with a fail-safe mechanism that automatically shuts off or significantly restricts the hot water supply if the cold water feed fails. This protects users from sudden temperature fluctuations and helps prevent serious scalding injuries.
TMVs are widely used in healthcare facilities, care homes, schools, leisure facilities, hotels, commercial buildings and residential properties where vulnerable users may be present.
Why Are TMVs Important?
TMVs provide an essential balance between scald prevention and Legionella control.
Superior Scalding Protection
Water temperatures capable of controlling Legionella can also cause severe burns within seconds. TMVs continuously adjust the mixture of hot and cold water to maintain a safe outlet temperature, even when pressure fluctuations occur elsewhere in the system.
If the cold water supply fails unexpectedly, the valve’s fail-safe mechanism automatically shuts off the hot water flow, protecting building occupants from accidental scalding.
