    FAQs

Can I certify my clean to BESA’s TR19® Grease once I have passed the Grease Hygiene Technician course (GHT)?

Once you have passed the BESA Grease Hygiene Technician (GHT) course, to enable you to certify your cleans to TR19® Grease, your company needs to apply to become a member of the BESCA Ventilation Hygiene Register.

As part of the acceptance criteria for the Ventilation Hygiene Register (VHR), they check that your company has qualified Grease Hygiene Technician’s (GHT’s), as this is a requirement of TR19® Grease. To move from a VHR registrant to a fully Approved Member a VHR Registrant must complete a stage called the ‘1st 5 stage’. This is to have 5 compliant Post Clean Reports audited against TR19® requirements.

When a company is going through the 1st 5 process, their membership is classed as ‘under review’ and the system will allow 1 Post Clean Report (PCR) to be uploaded at a time. This means that once you’ve carried out a clean, you can submit your PCR to the Scheme and they will carry out a desktop audit on it. This takes them between 24 and 48 hours. If the PCR is not deemed compliant, they will work with you to get it to a compliant status.

Once this first report is compliant, you can then carry on and submit another PCR (up to 5) until BESCA is satisfied that your company is competent, and they will award you ‘Approved Member’ status.

You can then certify your cleans to TR19® Grease and use the logo on your paperwork.

Can I certify my clean to BESA’s TR19® Grease once I have passed the Grease Hygiene Operative course (GHO)?

No, only a person who has passed the Grease Hygiene Technician (GHT) course can certify a clean to TR19® Grease (and if their company is an approved member of the BESCA Ventilation Hygiene Register).

Do I need prior experience of cleaning grease extract systems before I can take either the GHO or GHT course?

Ideally you will have 3 months experience before taking the Grease Hygiene Operative (GHO) course. You will need to pass the GHO course before you can be accepted onto the Grease Hygiene Technician (GHT) course.

How do I become a member of the BESCA VHR (Vent Hygiene Register)?

You can do this for free if you are a BESA member. If you are not a BESA member, your company will need to be assessed for competence. The current fee for this is £350 (at 20/04/2023). Please see: https://www.thebesa.com/vent-hygiene-register for more details.

What is the difference between the GHT and the GHO course – and does this impact what the engineer can do on site?

The GHT course is for the Supervisor and the GHO course is for the Operative. It is only the Supervisor who can complete the Post Clean Report (PCR) and certify the clean to TR19®Grease.

Is a GHO a higher accreditation than a GHT?

The GHT course is for the Supervisor so is therefore higher than the GHO which is for the Operative.
