Men’s Mental Health Month
November is recognised as Men’s Mental Health Month – a period for raising awareness about mental health challenges faced by men and encouraging open conversations about seeking help.
Significance of Men’s Mental Health Month
Men’s Mental Health Month aims to address the unique mental health challenges that men encounter, such as depression, anxiety, and societal pressures that often discourage them from seeking help. The month serves as a platform to normalise discussions about mental health, reduce stigma, and promote well-being among men.
Swiftclean’s mental health first aider, Victoria Page, adds, “It can be really hard in this industry in particular, for men to be open and honest or even talk about their feelings, but it shouldn’t be.”
She continues, “Talking creates a forum for men to share their experiences with each other,” adding that self-awareness is a very powerful tool.
Victoria, who recently earned her therapeutic counselling qualification, emphasises that at Swiftclean, we are committed to supporting those in need. She offers an ‘open door policy,’ encouraging anyone who requires assistance to feel free to talk to her. Additionally, we recommend charitable organisations that can provide support, and we offer counselling services for employees when needed.
We asked some of the Swiftclean team what they do to protect and nurture their mental health:
- “I like going for the classic walk, particularly at night, as I find it really peaceful” – Charlie
- “Cataloguing my trading card collection is something I do after a busy day at work. I find it really therapeutic and helps separate work from home life.” – Sam
- “I find that team sports like rugby and football take my mind off of things, particularly when working as a team, you are thinking of others rather than what’s going on in your own head” – Ben
- “I walk the dog, watch some comfort TV or something relatable on YouTube such as retro gaming! I also enjoy cooking and eating good food and spending time with my girlfriend.” – Richard
- “I tend to opt for physical activity, such as tennis, cycling, riding my motorbike or weight training.” – Gary
- “I normally go to the driving range in the evening; I play golf at the weekend when I can and also go to the gym. I also find a lunchtime walk also really helps to break up the day.” – John
